A skippers responsibility
Maritime Law still applies to skippers regardless of what vessel you are skipper of particularly if solicitors were looking to sue for negligence.
Safety
The skipper is responsible for the safety of the vessel, crew, and passengers. This includes ensuring the vessel is river/seaworthy, and that the crew are aware of health and safety risks. Skippers should also ensure that the vessel is operated safely and in compliance with the law.
Navigation
Skippers should have knowledge of navigation, weather, tides, and other boating-related topics, particularly if it applies to the type of watercourse they are embarking on. They should also ensure that the vessel follows the correct river regulations and maritime laws.
Equipment
Skippers are responsible for maintaining the vessel’s equipment and ensuring that it is operational.
Voyage
Ultimately the decision to embark on a voyage is down to the skipper any legal implications rest with them.
